Limitations
Caregiver Support
my beacon relies on caregiver support to ensure
it is charged-up and carried by the patient.
A caregiver needs to be available to notice that
the patient has become lost and arrange a search
should this happen. A person with dementia may
not realise they have become lost or are in a
situation of risk. When
might my beacon be useful?
Mobile-Phone Reception
When the mobile-phone reception is weak, it is possible to request my beacon reports its location back to the web-site using SMS (text messaging). This ensures the device can be used in areas of poor reception. However, it is more expensive. It costs on average 75p to send by SMS instead of just 1p for a typical series of 15 locations returned after a Track Now command is sent.
The
GPS Signal
GPS tracking is dependent on being able to receive a satellite signal. Importantly, my beacon does not reliably work indoors. Other factors that can disrupt the GPS signal include being in a car, areas with very tall buildings, forests with tall trees and, rarely, adverse weather conditions.
