Frequently Asked Questions

I do not have a mobile-phone or a computer with internet access?  Is my beacon still useful?

Yes, you can access your relative’s location through our specially-trained call centre 24 hours/day.  Also, if you know somebody with internet access or a mobile phone, they can check your relative’s location for you and even be alerted by text-message if they leave their ‘GeoFence,’ that is, the safe area you have defined for them.

I do not want to be tied into a monthly bill. Are there any other ways of paying for a my beacon?

Yes, you can opt for Pay-As-You-Go.  This means you will only have to pay for the times you actually track the patient and means you can avoid a monthly set-charge.

My mother with dementia lives alone.  Will my beacon benefit her?

Sometimes.  There needs to be a person available who will recognise if the patient becomes lost and will be able to get help from others in searching for them.  This person will also need to ensure my beacon is charged up and attached to the patient.  Ideally, this would be a live-in carer or family member.

My father tends to wander more at night.  Will my beacon benefit him?

Yes, but there needs to be a secure place to attach my beacon on to his night-clothes and there will need to be someone present to recognise he is missing.  A GeoFence around the home, whereby a text-message alert is sent if they leave this area, may also help.

What happens if my sister becomes lost in an area where there is no mobile coverage?

Where a location cannot be sent from my beacon to the website using the standard mobile phone GPRS network setting, it is possible to request that my beacon reports its location back to the website using SMS (text messaging) setting.  SMS is more reliable in areas where there is poor mobile phone network coverage. To do this, select the SMS setting when doing Track Now.  This costs more.  (75p instead of 0.1p for a typical series of 15 locations returned after a Track Now command is sent).

Before my husband started wandering, we used to love travelling abroad.  Do you think a my beacon would allow us to take up holidays to unfamiliar places again?

Yes, as long as there is a mobile phone network at your holiday destination, then my beacon can be set to work abroad. You will need to leave your own simcard in the device and it will also need to be set to roaming in order to be fully accesible in other countries.

I think my wife would benefit from a my beacon but I’m concerned she may accidentally loose it.  Are there ways of preventing this from happening?

Yes, there are many different types of mobile phone holders that can be attached to your wife’s clothes and used to carry my beacon.  It is important to find one that is comfortable and secure.

I think my father would benefit from a my beacon but I travel a lot from the office and often do not have PC access.  Are there other ways I can check my father is not lost?

Yes, you can check your father’s location through a WAP-enabled mobile-phone and can receive text-message alerts if he leaves a designated safe area.  Alternatively, you can call our specialist call centre who will be able to check for you.

I would like to get a my beacon for my father.  However, I don’t think he will agree to wearing one.  Are there any ways of ensuring he carries it?

No.  For whatever reasons, some people do not want to wear a tracker.  If you think your father will not tolerate one or may feel stigmatised by it then it would not be ethical to enforce it.  Furthermore, my beacon is designed to be carried by the person with dementia and so if he does not cooperate with it, it is unlikely to work.

My mother has always enjoyed walking.  I’d really like to see her continue to go to her local shops but worry about her wandering on to more busy roads further a field.  Can my beacon help?

By setting a GeoFence, you can be alerted by text-message if she leaves a safe area or enters an unsafe area.  You decide which areas are safe for her to continue walking in with the reassurance of knowing that if she leaves this area, you will be alerted.  BUT, and it is a big but, you need to have a system for someone to go and get her if she is wanders into a dangerous area.
