Limited GPS Signal & Mobile-Phone Triangulation

Poor GPS signal occurs when MyBeacon cannot ‘see’ the satellites from which it works out the location.  Provided the person is outside, this is rarely a problem. my beacon does not reliably work indoors. Other factors that can disrupt the GPS signal include being in a car, areas with very tall buildings, forests with tall trees and, rarely, adverse weather conditions.

Mobile Phone Triangulation can be used on the rare occasion that a satellite signal cannot be received.  It is almost always possible to get a location by triangulating the position against masts of the mobile phone network.  However, this has limited accuracy but it will let you know to the nearest 10 km where the patient is, and can sometimes be more accurate than this.

Poor GPRS Mobile-Phone Signal & Using SMS

Where a location cannot be sent from the my beacon to the website using the standard mobile phone GPRS network setting, it is possible to request that my beacon reports its location back to the website using SMS (text messaging) setting.  SMS is more reliable in areas where there is poor mobile phone network coverage. To do this, select the SMS setting when doing Track Now.  This costs more if you are on a Pay-As-You-Go package.  (on average 75p instead of 0.1p for a typical series of 15 locations returned after a Track Now command is sent). There is no additional charge for Pay-Monthly customers.
